Dinosaur vs bedtime by Bob Shea
June 21st, 2010Dinosaur vs bedtime is a funny simple book that I think kids would love reading / hearing.
It is a story about a Dinosaur (who takes the place of a kid) doing day to day things.
Like “Dinosaur vs a bowl of Spaghetti. Roar Roar chomp chomp, DINSOAUR wins!”
He battles tooth brushing a slide and finally bedtime.
It reminds me of Mo Willems Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus, in that is just one idea. It also has very simple child like drawings.
It is a very modern and hip book, which I like. Feels fresh and has collage elements which are very “in” right now.
I think any kid from 2-6 would love this book. It’s a quick fun read and give children’s the opportunity to pretend to act like dinosaurs.
When I’m working on books it is one that I constantly look at for inspiration and as a reminder that simple can be great if done correctly!
Here is the book as a video:

Greenie Puppet part 3
June 16th, 2010When I have to use a lot of pins quickly I hold them in my mouth. I just have to be careful not to stick my lips!

Now I am getting some where. I have legs on and getting the fabric in place on his head! I’m using green polar fleece because its fuzzy making the stitch easier to hide!! its starting to look like Greenie!

NJ SCBWI conference.
June 15th, 2010Last weekend I attended the Scbwi Nj conference. Which was a blast. So much good information that im still processing it. My friend Joyce wrote a really great review of the festival.
I also took part in the book fair. I meet some nice people and talked books and Dyslexia. Here is a photo of my half of the table.

It was at the Hyatt hotel in Princeton, which was very nice and now feels like a 2d home. This had nothing to do with the festival but it was like 90 and SUPER humid outside so it was great to be inside in AC for the whole weekend!
I meet many new people all of who had interesting stories about publishing ups and downs.
I am always trying to figure out how to make books my full time and only job. So it in invaluable to talk to others about their publishing adventures. So many people do books and so many more want to do books.. It is a challenge and this conference helped me better understand the difficulties and ways to make it happen.
It was great, I learned a lot that has forever changed me as a author so I think them for putting on a great conference!
The Neddiad by Daniel Pinkwater.
June 14th, 2010Daniel Pinkwater is one of my favorite authors. Fat Men from Space
Was one of my favorite books as a tween. Uncle Boris in the Yukon and Other Shaggy Dog Stories is a collection of real life stories about his dogs I also greatly enjoyed. ON top of all the children’s books he written.

I was excited to get the Neddiad, which is a strange and calm book.
It is about a boy who gets a magic turtle that he needs to save the world for darkness. Along the way he meet many fun characters. This book takes place around the 1930-40s.
Like all Pinkwater books he has unique characters that do quirky things. Neddies dad is a shoelace king, they meet shamans, Hollywood stars and circus ranchers.
I thought the first 3d of the book was amazing, 2d part good, 3d part ok. The story has a lot of characters and sometimes I got lost remembering who was who. While the whole book was about magic, most of the book was grounded in very detailed reality. So when the end comes it seems out of place.
His writing made is seem like an action adventure story, but in fact not much happens. There is a lot of talking about what COULD happen, but not a lot does.
Strangely that works. He writes many amazing character moments, that bring these quirky characters to life.
I enjoyed Pinkwaters writing and characters. I thought the plot got a little bogged down, but still a fun read.
