Liberty Porter First Daughter by Julia DeVillers: Ryan review

Liberty Porter, First Daughter by Julia DeVillers
Last week I was at a get-together and met Julia DeVillers.  She was super nice and had the best stories, but I had never read any of her books!  So I got “Liberty Porter, First Daughter” and I’m happy to say it was as awesome to read as Julia was to meet.
It stars a girl whose father has just been elected President.  The story is about the day they move into the White House.  Liberty is a great character, full of quirkiness and fun.  She knows a lot of strange facts about the White House, which I greatly enjoyed: “Did you know that there have been many strange pets in the White House? Like a badger named Josuah, lion clubs, alligators and a pygmy hippopotamus?”
This is a great book for any kid interested in the White House. The characters and writing are fun and engaging. Ryan recommends!

My Christmas monkey puppet show!

Before I got into picture books, I did large puppets professionally. Every holiday season I’d put on shows at the Fort Worth Zoo. ( I was living in Dallas at the time.)  My favorite show from those days was a Christmas production that starred a monkey!  We even made it on the local news.  Here is a video.

I put up a bunch of clips from my puppets over the years.  You can see them all on my website.

Happy Holidays!

Are You Eating Something Red? in an Cambodia orphanage

So my friend Yangsook, packed up all of her belongings and is working with an orphanage in Cambodia. She gave them her collection of picutre books and Greenie was in that. She was kind enough to send me pictures of “Are You Eating Something red?” which blew my mind!
Enjoy.

William Joyce @ Books of Wonder

Last week I went to Books of Wonder to Bill’s(William Joyce’s) book launch party signing for “Guardians of childhood : The Man in the Moon.

I’ve been to a few Man in the moon parties so far (ALA and BEA) but none of them had cake and cupcakes! YUMMMMM I probably ate 4!

This photo shows the true joy of eating cupcakes. That is my little best friends Chloe, her mom only wanted to her have like 1 cupcake, but I think she had 4 because she’s so cute and all adults kept giving her cupcakes! Could you resist that smile?

I even ran in another author I knew Laurie Calkhoven. Then Dan Yaccarino, Mike Knapp and Greag Couch showed up also. Illustrator party!!

This is my favorite shot of the night, Chloe scratching her butt and looking at art!

It was a fun evening!

Sesame english wrap party

Last year i got to achieve a dream of working for Sesame Street. I worked for a division called Sesame English, where we created programing for Japanese kids to learn english. It was hard work, but super fun to draw Elmo, Oscar, big bird, bert and Ernie!

The project officially wrapped last month (even though i haven’t worked on it in 8 months) They had a wrap party for everyone that worked on it! It was great catching up with everyone and seeing the AWESOME cookie LCD chandelier! They even gave us limited edition t-shirts!

Thanks Sesame workshop, I hope to work with you again! :D

Ryan Sias New York Comic con 2010

Comic con was crazy huge! I’ve never seen the Javits center so packed. Luckily I had a table in artist alley so i had some personal space. I was great counter programing. I sold a lot of books / placemats to people who wanted to take something home to their kids. On saturday i sold out of placemats!

Friday for me was friends day. I caught up with many of my old Flight crew. Kean Soo author illustrator of Jellaby stopped by and gave greeine a hug.

the other guy is Dan Dojo, he was at the table next to me. He is an amazing digital painter and very nice.

My publisher Blue Apple Books stopped by, and Kip and Elliot gave me the funniest photo of comic con! Thanks guys!

When i do conventions in New York I pack my own lunch and snacks. This year i did a good job of obeying my book “Are You Eating Something Green? Yes i was!

Comic con had a lot of video games this year, the funniest one was the new Michael Jackson game. I watched many people try to dance and keep up with MJ, it looked like silly fun!

This family was the best costumed family i’ve ever seen!
I also found this crazy grape in my snacks! It looks like a pumpkin, but its a grape!

I don’t have any photos but every time i was in the bathroom I saw a star wars character. The best one was when there was a 8 foot wookie growling waiting in line for the urinal!

New York comic con was great madness! Its always a unique experience and one i look forward to each year!
